Hip-Hop Summit?

This could not go by without some conversation. While I was reading in our local paper, I came across This article. There has been much talk about youth violence in our area, and it seems like this is one of the things that people would like to do to fix it. But my question to all of the readers is, "how does pushing Hip-Hop deter violence". Now, if you have any understanding of the message behind hip-hop, you realize that this will not work!
Read the article, and sound off - Maybe we can make some changes!

Comments:
After reading this article, two things really stood out to me. The first thing was the fact that it is hosted by an organization headed by a local "minister". There has to be a better way. I know we are supposed to meet them where they are. But, how far are we willing to go? And at what costs. What image are we as "christians" portraying by sponsoring a Hip Hop Summit?

Second was the comment made by Eric Shafer- ""(Hip hop) is what they know, what they listen to, what they believe in and enjoy," he said."" Is it really? There has to be some other common ground to emphasize.

Your comments bring up an interesting set of questions:
1 - What is the issue with the Local minister as the host?
2 - Who would a better host be?

I agree hands down that a hip-hop summit is not the way to go, but as we are trying to bring about change - What is the way to go?

I'm not entirely opposed to this event taking place, but I do have a sinking feeling that the content will not offer a genuine or Godly solution. The title does need to be changed. In case no one has noticed, hip hop is not the most peaceful culture or medium out there and it almost sounds hypocriticle for "religious" people to host a summit whos title depicts that which is contrary to the gosple of Jesus Christ. That being said, I think that "Dayton Youth Summit" or something of that nature would be a sufficient title.

It is safe to say that the individuals who have commited the recent acts of violence within our community may not have a relationship with God. Therefore, I believe that durring this "summit", an alternitive must be presented and proclaimed. We must at least present the option of clean living and that should be followed by someone who is successfull and can atribute their success to a clean lifestyle. I know that when I was growing up all the success that I saw was that of pimps and drug dealers and that lead me to become attracted to that lifestyle. If we show our youth good fruit, there is a good chance that they will become attracted to our Godly lifestyles.
