Sunday, December 04, 2005Small Group MinistriesFor many of us that have grown up in church, we do not know much about small group ministry. For me, I know I went to church on Wednesday Night and then I would not really see those people again until Sunday Morning. The more I study small group ministry, the more I realize that it is wonderful model for the personal growth and development of the members of any congregation. For those that are currently involved in small group ministry, what do you think works well, and what does not? For those that are not involved in small group ministry, what are your thoughts on the concept?
Comments:
When you say "small group ministries", are talking about partnering up with maybe two or three other believers and trying to provoke spiritual growth through studying wording, praying, and seeking God's face together?
yes, I would be talking about getting together with two, three, or even more believers on a regular basis for spiritual growth and development. This could be done not only through biblical study, prayer, etc., but also through fellowship!
I think small group ministries are almost necessary for the continual growth and development of christians. I mean the bible does say that "iron sharpens iron."
And speaking from personal experience. Getting saved can be a loney journey for some. Because when that change occurs in you I know I didn't feel as comfortable hanging around the same people that were talking about all the things I was trying to keep from. So if there are those like me I felt really alone till I met some that believed what I believed.
It is good for like minds to get together! How do you think that small groups should be put in place in our local ministries? What are the dangers?
Not quite sure on how these groups should be developed but I know it starts with prayer and direction. The only danger I can think of is someone not moving ahead when God says go. Often times we get too comfortable in one place. When something feels good, we want to experience it all over again by doing what we did to experience it in the first place. We can be doing the right thing for too long and miss out on what God is trying to do. I had a brother in Christ who helped me a lot. When God was trying to birth somethings in my life, he was there telling me to push. Once those things had come to pass, my brother had to move on. I spent countless hours a day trying to find him, however he was no where to be found. God then told me that his season to be in my life was over. I couldn't understand because this brother prayed for/with me, he encouraged me, and he spoon-fed me the word of God. God then said, im trying to get you to another level. It's time to stop nursing. I had became so dependant on him that I couldn't function in Christ on my own. (at least I thought I couldn't) God was trying to get me to a place in Him that my spiritual brother was not predestined to go. That's the only danger I see... Not moving forward.
