There is a decline in Reading - Why?

There are several studies that are floating around the internet such as the one found here That paint a picture of dramatic reading decline. Why do you think people are not reading like that did in the past? I know for me, I try to read as much as I can, but younger generations do not seem to read much at all (except what is required of them at school). Trends like this, in my mind contribute to the academic decline that we see so clearly in many of our schools!

Comments:
There has been a tremendous shift in the entertainment industry over the past few years. Think about when you were a kid, there were 3-4 television channels. And not many shows on those stations other than sports or news. Reading was popular because there wasn't much else to do. Reading was the window to the world. Kids read comic books and novels for entertainment.

Now we have multiple television stations, the internet, and video games. Technology has spoiled us. Why read a book when you can see the movie about it on television or at the movie theater.

ok - While I agree with what you are saying, I guess the next question is, "How do we reverse this trend"?

We must start at an early age (possible 3-4 years old) teaching our kids that it's exciting and fun to discover things for them self by reading and doing things together as a family. Believe it or not, most kids are trained to watch TV and play video games so that they will be out of the parents way. Therefore, as parents, we must change our priorities and be examples by reading ourselves, instead of watching TV and playing video games. Look at how much money we as parents could save and look at how much closer families would be.
