Monday, November 06, 2006Finance - Where do we go wrong?![]() We started our new series at the church about harvest entitled "Seeds". During the series, we began to speak about how for many of us, our finances our out of control. We are in a place where we either do not have enough, or we have just enough. Now, as I look at what the Lord promised us, we should realize that a life without financial freedom is not the life the God wants for his children. Those outside of the body of Christ will often times go to great lengths to make sure that they make it to the road of financial freedom, while those in the body of Christ seem to lean on the "magic" of waiting on the Lord. We need to understand that waiting on God does not mean that you do nothing!!! Faith without works is dead. Waiting on God means that you do not get ahead of the Lord's plan for you life, that you keep him first...not that you sit in your chair and wait on the job to come to you, but that you beat the pavement! We, in the body of Christ need to make financial freedom a priority not only so that we can live in peace, but also so that we can be a good example to the non-believer of integrity and financial progress. Life after salvation should not be a poor life, it should be a more abundant life... On this Wednesday, I am going to dig deeper into God's plan for financial freedom so you do not want to miss it... Often times, what I teach on Sunday and what I teach on Wednesday are two different things, but God has led me to do something different...So, if you miss Wednesday, you are missing parts of the series!!! We look forward to seeing you there!
Comments:
I think one of several elements of finance that African Americans inside and outside of the Body of Christ have missed is the importance of allignment of ones financial priorities. Our people have a tendancy to make unnecessary purchases, major and minor that keep us in the "red" as it relates to our money. Foolish purchases only hinder our ability to establish wealth... but we continue to make them. I friend of mine recently made a major purchase which they could not afford, but it helped them to gain "social acceptance" and it was apparently worth it to go in debt just to keep up with everyone else. I think that self discipline is one of the most important things needed in order to prevent this type of spending and this should be taught across the Body.
I think that people need to do a serious personal inventory or thier "stuff". Now stuff can be anything tangible. 6 pair of black pants, 15 pair of black pumps, clothes that no longer fit or are out of style (and we KNOW we're not going to wear them anymore) and etc. We have so much stuff and we continue to add to the stuff. If you're like me and have more stuff than room, then you need to do an inventory and get rid of some of that stuff! And even more importantly, STOP buying new stuff! It's only hurting you financially anyway, so why not save your money? If we can discipline ourselves to get rid of old stuff and refrain from buying new stuff (that we don't need), then I'll bet that we will begin to see our finances look a little more favorably. This is a problem Nation wide... We consistantly purchase and/or obtain "stuff" with little consequence for actual need or the possible financial repercusions. That's called CONSUMERISM and it's hurting Americas economy and our fiscal lives! And we as Christians need to set the example as it relates to finance and one area in particular that I think we all can take a closer look at is our desire for excess which is wastefull spending.
Sincerely, The Junk Hater
Dear brother, I agree with you about the abundant life, but we should seek spiritual abundance more than material abundance. I was just reading this morning in Matthew 6:19-21 - "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal. But lay up for yourselves treasure in heaven, wheter neither moth nor rust destroys, and where theives do not break in or steal. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also."
You know, I have come to realize that materialism is bondage to the world's way of doing things. On the other hand, I think God wants us to apply sound financial principals in our lives. In the case of our family, we got into about $12,000 debt simply because we were making poor decisions and because we were buying things we couldn't afford. Well, a lot of this was because of covetousness on our part, and that was a sin. We had to confess this all to God, and then apply some real discipline -- we had to do our part, but God also did His part, and increased our salaries, so we could get all the debt paid off. Now in our case, the reason we needed to be debt free was so we could be free to go to the mission field, and that's where we are now- Praise Him! Now our livelihood is dependent upon God's people, but the support came in, and God has kept His promise that He will meet all our needs. We're not rich and we're not poor -- but we have enough to live a decent life and have a few small "extra" comforts and it's exciting to see how God works.
i like to say in this series that i have gotton alot out of this ..The Lord has shown me what it like to put him first and to put him last..we want God to bless u in money and riches but what r we willing to do for the break thru..in times b4 i have been a poor steward over my money and it has cost me a great deal then thee r times were i have did great and the Lord has shown himself strong..i had to understand that i must do it his way and the havest will be plentyful but if not ..well u know the rest
